Dolphins select CB Vontae Davis, QB Pat White, CB Sean Smith and 2 WRs in first 4 rounds

Dolphins select CB Vontae Davis with 25th overall pick
add QB Pat White and CB Sean Smith in second round
Fins add 2 WRs in third and fourth

The Dolphins had a strange draft that is getting mixed reviews. After going for need in the first round and drafting CB Vontae Davis of illinois the draft went nowhere near where most people thought the Fins were going to go. Miami surprised everyone with the Pat White pick, a QB from West Virginia that in a best case scenario will play 5 snaps a game out of the wildcat position. They did manage to grab another good CB in Sean Smith of Utah at the end of round two. They reached, according to the "experts" for two WRs in the 3rd and fourth round (WR PAtrick Turner of USC and WR Brian Hartline of Ohio State) and then picked a TE and a Safety with their two 5th rounders - TE John Nalbone of Monmouth and S Chris Clemons of Clemson, they finished the draft by picking OT Andrew Gardner of Georgia Tech in the 6th round and LB JD Folsom of Webster State in the last round.

I'll explain why I am not in love with the Pat White pick - First I'll say I never watched White play, I'm sure he is a very good QB and I trust the front office. That being said, let's be honest we don't know what draft pick will pan out and what pick will turn out to be a complete bust. Let's assume that the front office hits on EVERY player and they know best. The only way to evaluate the picks is to assume a best case scenario for each pick. My thinking is the players picked in the first 3 rounds should be able to have the potential to someday become starters for the Dolphins (if you hit on the pick).
Yes, It's true that Patriots all-world QB Tom Brady was a 6th rounder but let's face it most good players were picked in the first 3 rounds.

We'll take a look at the Dolphins. They have 12 starters on offense (including Ricky) - 6 SIX! were first rounders Long, Carey, Pennington, Brown, Ginn and Ricky (the Saints gave up a hole draft for him...), 3 were second rounders (Grove, Smiley and Fasano) and only 3 were picked outside of the first 2 rounds - the FB ,which teams (even the Raiders) never pick in the draft since the Carter administration, RG Donald Thomas (let's hold the applause after he finishes a single pro game) and Bess/Camarillo and most Dolfans wanted them to pick a WR in the first round for that reason exactly. That's 75% of the offensive starters were picked in the top 2 rounds.

Let's look at the defense Will Allen and Jason Allen were first round selections, Roth and Merling second rounders, Langford, Porter, Crowder and Ayodele were all third round picks. that's a total of 8 of 11 in the first 3 rounds, Gibril Wilson was a 5th rounder and Jason Ferguson a 7th rounder. Yeremiah Bell a sixth rounder (mainly because of an injury in his senior year). The total is 17 of 23 - almost 74% - of the Dolphin current starters were picked in the first 3 rounds of the draft. In other words a pick in the first 3 rounds should, at least, have the potential to become a regular starter, QB Pat White will never be a starter for the Dolphins. He is not going to beat out Chad Henne or Chad Pennington and that's why I think it's a pick a franchise like the Pats can do but not Miami, the Fins have a lot of holes to fill, by the way, going just after White were talented (again according to "experts") OLB Sintim and Barwin - we could have used the help in the sack departemnt, Joey Porter will not have another 17.5 sack season... I'll be very very happy with 11. That's just my opinion. I am very happy with the two CBs, I hope at least one of them becomes a solid starter.

SEASON ENDS IN PLAYOFF LOSS
5 turnovers end amazing season, Fins lose 27-9
This amazing Dolphins season ended on Sunday as the Dolphins lost 27-9 to the visiting Ravens in the wild card playoff game 27-9. The Dolphins lost 5 turnovers, 4 of them Pennington interceptions. The Dolphins tied the league's all time record for fewest turnoves in a season with just 13 but had 5 on the day. It was only the second game this season the Dolphins had more than 1 turnover. The Dolphins had more problems than the frequent turnovers. Pennington had no time to throw the ball as the O-line collapsed time and again in front of the Raven pressure. The running game was absent as well and the Fins lacked a big time WR. They only had 3 on the roster and Bess misses some time during the game with an injury. London caught 2 passes in his career prior to this game... Fasano was also a non-factor. The Fins defense also failed to generate any kind of pressure on Ravens QB Joe Flacco as he had all day to throw the ball. It was dissapointing, but the season turned out to be a big-time success story as the 1-15 Dolphins of 2007 transformed themselves into 11-5 division champions that felt they had a good chance in the playoffs...

MARINO ENSHRINED IN HALL OF FAME
Throws last pass to Clayton

At the bottom, Marino receives his hall of fame gold jacket
Dolphins' legendary quarterback and the most prolific passer in NFL history, Dan Marino, is now a hall of fame quarterback. Marino, considered by many the greatest quarterback ever, has been elected to pro football's shrine in his first year of elegibility. Marino is the owner of more than 20 NFL passing records including most TDs (420), most passing yards (61,361), most completions (4,967), most attempts (8,358), most games 300 yards passing (63), most games 400 yards passing (13), most games with 4 or more TDs (21) and most yards in a season (5,084). There are 229 members in the hall of fame, less than a quarter of them were elected in their first year of elegibility. 49ers coach and hall of famer, Bill Walsh, who coached both Steve Young and Joe Montana, said "we will never see anyone like him again".
Marino was (and still is) the only rookie ever elected to the probowl. He was elected the starter... It was the first of his 9 pro bowl selections. His second year was the best season by a quarterback ever and perhaps the best year by any player ever, throwing for 362 completions on 564 attempts for 5,084 yards and 48 TDs. All of them were NFL records. The yardage mark is still a record. The TDs record was broken in 2004 after the rule changes made passing easier. Before 2004 the only player that ever came close to the TD record was Dan himself when he threw 44 in 1986.
Thousands of Dolphins fans made the pilgrimage to Canton, Ohio. To a long standing ovation Marino was introduced by his son Danno. The presentation speech by Dan's son was one of the most memorables and emotional presenting speeches in years as he talked about his Dad's private life and his relationship with the Florida community. He mentioned Dan Marino's children's hospital founded by Marino and the Dan Marino foundation.
Marino had a memorable and emotional speech. Marino thanked his fellow players and coaches through the years, his high school and college coaches. He called Don Shula the best coach ever. He thanked the Marks Brothers - Mark Clayton and Mark Duper and center Dwight Stephenson. He said the thing he misses the most is going out of the tunnel as the starting QB of the Miami Dolphins. After thanking his family, he wanted to do one thing one last time. Marino completed 538 balls to Mark Clayton and he wanted to do it one more time. Marino licked his fingers as he did for 17 seasons in Miami, his son gave him a football as Mark Clayton went deep one last time Marino finished his speech with a perfect deep spiral caught by Clayton for the last time.
The story of the best quarterback ever is now complete - Dan Marino, Hall of Fame Quarterback.

Dan Marino Retirement speech and the Marino section

"After 17 years I would like to announce my retirement from the Miami Dolphins. After playing the game of football most of my life, this was an extremely difficult decision. But I know that I had made the right decision for me and my family. I am very proud of the success that we have had as a team for 17 years, as well as all my individual accomplishments. Not many people have an opportunity to spend 17 years of their life doing what they truly love to do. And as I stand here before you today, I can say that I had been blessed with a career greater than I could have ever imagined..."
